How does a role model I know plan to achieve a goal?

  • Essential Question (guiding question): How does a role model I know plan to achieve a goal?
  • Objective: Students will identify a role model and construct interview questions to determine how a successful person achieves goals.
  • Activation/Motivation Strategy: Together the class will brainstorm and list the qualities of what makes a person a good role model.
  • Teaching Strategies:
    • Together the class will watch a Classroom Champions videos which can be found on the student Diigo page called Create Steps to Set Goals with Meryl Davis and Charlie White. (__https://groups.diigo.com/group/pblgroup1__ ) The video features Meryl Davis and Charlie White, Olympic Ice Skaters, explaining how they plan to achieve a specific long term goal. After watching the video the class will construct three interview questions that they would ask the athletes in the video based on previous class discussion of goals.
    • Independently students will choose a person they consider a role model that they will be able to interview. The student must be able to explain why they consider this person an example of a role model who sets and achieves goals. After the role model is approved the student will create three to eight questions, depending on their grade level, to ask their role model about their experience with goal setting and planning. The teacher will contact students’ interview subjects to find someone willing and able to to discuss how they use goal setting in their life with the class via Skype or Google+ Hangouts. (__https://groups.diigo.com/group/pbl_group1_teacher_resources__ )The interview should be planned to coincide with a follow up lesson, where students will share their interviews in groups.
